Kaia Aragon has found what makes her heart beat faster. And this is the wonderful world of fashion and dress making. The Colorado elementary school student was first introduced to the craft by her mom, Tonya, in November 2021, and it was the start of something very special.

The fashionista wows the internet with her creative handmade designs. From dresses to cosplay costumes, flowy dresses to fancy two-piece suits, she can do it all! To add intrigue to it all, she uses the hallway of her house as a catwalk to showcase the designs, and all we can say is: work on it!

Kaia dreams of becoming a professional fashion designer when she grows up and it seems her dream is not far off. The mother-daughter duo have 5,000 followers on Instagram and 10,000 followers on TikTok, many of whom are eagerly awaiting what the girl comes up with next!

“My inspiration comes from a different place for each design,” Kaia told My Modern Met. “The only thing that stays the same is that I only use super soft and comfortable fabrics.” Comfort seems to be a big focus in her designs , especially since the existing range of clothes for girls her age lacked this quality.

“I like making dresses because the fancy dresses in the little girls departments are so stiff and uncomfortable,” she explained. “With my own clothes, I can be super stylish and comfortable at the same time. So I can go to a tea party and then ride my scooter to the park and not have to change.” Practical and stylish – can we ask for more?

Though Kaia has designed dozens of outfits, her favorite to date is “a white satin dress I made from fabric that I hand-painted.” It looks dazzling and color changing as she turns around and shows off the dress. They collect most materials from thrift stores; Pick up an object full of potential and let your imagination run wild.

She was even gifted a sewing machine from Vera Wang – one of America’s most prominent bridal designers, known for balancing modern designs with traditional elegance. In an interview with HBR, she advised young designers: “It’s wonderful to be passionate and to have a dream. But start working for someone you respect – or anyone really – and get paid to learn.”

“You have to learn what came before so you know (a) you’re not really being inventive and (b) what rules you want to break,” she continued. Hard work makes the dream come true, and encouraging young women to follow their passion starts with telling them to prove they are the best they can be.

It may seem daunting to start sewing, especially since sewing machines are quite expensive if you don’t have the cash. Then you think of all the tutorials and stuff you have to go through to learn, all the books to read, all the time you have to put in, and the dream just keeps floating away.

I am in this very boat myself. But hey, it doesn’t have to be that complicated! As Silver Bobbin says, “Learning to sew is no harder than learning to bake pastries or building a bookshelf. Like any new skill, it is best learned step by step, with practice.”

They go on to explain that the best place to start is to decide what type of sewing you want to learn. This allows you to focus all of your research, practice, and preparation on mastering this skill. You don’t want to try to learn everything at once!

It’s also a good idea to consider whether you want to learn hand sewing or machine sewing. Hand sewing can be easier and cheaper; You may just need to buy a needle and some thread to get started. On the other hand, if you want to sew clothes, you probably need to learn how to use a sewing machine.

To sew clothes, you must learn how to use a sewing pattern, how to cut out the pieces of your garment, and how to pin and sew the pieces together. Once you master these skills, you can basically sew anything your heart desires! Crazy Little Projects have put together a small dictionary of phrases and terms to help you understand what is required of you and I will leave the link to it here.
