role overview

Collect and produce materials used to communicate Medair’s mission, lifesaving work, unique selling points and highlight the humanitarian needs in countries of responsibility. Communication materials are essential to connect our work to people needed to help people in humanitarian need to walk and pray. The Communications Manager is a member of the Global Communications Team and is involved in supporting the communications needs of the programs in DR Congo (60%), Afghanistan (20%) and Madagascar (20%), as well as the Engagement Team and Partner Offices.

Project overview

In DR Congo, Medair conducts emergency health projects that target displaced, war-affected, and vulnerable populations in crisis regions. In Afghanistan, Medair implements multisectoral health and nutrition, WASH and food security projects in vulnerable communities in the central highlands and southern Afghanistan. In Madagascar, Medair is helping to develop the resilience of the most vulnerable and exposed to natural hazards through disaster risk reduction activities.

main areas of activity

communication strategy and resources

  • Find out where the country program’s activities, staff, and context strengthen Medair’s reputation as a global humanitarian organization focused on emergency response, and develop communication materials.
  • Participate in global content and communications strategy planning, including editorial meetings and annual workshop, and identify opportunities to leverage multimedia and online content.
  • Gather quality resources through on-site visits or by collaborating with field representatives and freelance photographers.
  • Prepare communication guidelines, first stop documents, gift manuals and any program outlines required to assist engagement and affiliate colleagues in preparing external materials.
  • Produce donor materials, social media content, corporate materials and facilitate timely reviews with program leadership.
  • Identify and assist field workers to participate in collecting photos, offers, and other materials; Submit Approved Materials to Global Libraries.
  • Prepare, facilitate and accompany field visits by high profile visitors, photographers, journalists or media teams. If necessary, draft service descriptions and contracts according to standard guidelines.

Media and public relations

  • Identify opportunities for media coverage of Medair’s program activities by monitoring global humanitarian media coverage, key developments related to the context, and program milestones.
  • Prepare press releases, editorials, and pitch stories for journalists on behalf of Medair and country programs.
  • Act as a spokesperson for the media or assist program colleagues in providing interviews for licensed journalists.
  • Respond to requests for media issues from affiliated offices as approved by leadership.

Institutional donor relations

  • Contribute to proposals related to communication and visibility. Provide visibility reports as needed.
  • Build relationships with institutional funder communications representatives to provide materials and develop opportunities related to global recognition days or program milestones.

Required standard materials

  • Submit annual report material annually.
  • Update Quarterly First Stop Program Schedule, Media Kit, Country Programs page of website.
  • Contribute to Medair News, three issues per year.
  • Update the program’s gift handles quarterly or when the program changes.
  • Contribute to quarterly content themes, campaigns, social media channels and private funding initiatives.
  • Submit website content monthly (story, photo story, interactive content, etc.).
  • Get involved in social media campaigns related to Global Appreciation Days.
  • Submit photos, quotes from staff, beneficiaries, and humanitarian partners after each field visit.

local management

  • Functional line management of field workers or focus areas with guidance and skill development.
  • Supporting the field leadership team in developing materials and methods to improve internal communication.
  • Work with program managers/project coordinators to manage communications budget lines and ensure communications and fundraising goals are met.
  • Oversee branded/co-branded materials with program procurement colleagues.
  • advise colleagues on the importance of branding and co-branding; Give advice on quality and presentation.

  • Completed studies in communication or marketing. Education or experience in multimedia production and editing.
  • Strong working knowledge of English and French (spoken and written).


  • 2 years of professional experience in the fields of media, communication, marketing or fundraising.
  • Excellent and inspirational communicator. Willing to share information internally and provide training.
  • Ability to form a good relationship and build trust with people who would share their story or have their picture taken.
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to target different audiences and customize output accordingly.
  • Ability to process technical information with engaging perspectives in lay language.
  • Competent photographer and videographer. You master video editing, video production and image editing.
