CHENNAI: The state-owned Aavin has set up a central laboratory in Madhavaram to test for the presence of pesticide/drug residues, heavy metals and aflatoxin M1, a carcinogenic chemical, in milk and dairy products.

The facility will also be used to test the quality parameters of Aavin dairies, which was previously performed by the external National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and FSSAI laboratories.

The laboratory, which spans 17,422 square feet, was built at a cost of Rs 8 crore under the National Dairy Development Program (NPDD) and was inaugurated by Prime Minister MK Stalin via video conference on Tuesday.

On October 18, 2019, the FSSAI released the 2018 National Milk Safety and Quality Survey, which found that 88 out of 551 milk samples collected by the state failed to meet quality parameters for the absence of aflatoxin M1. The Aavin found that aflatoxin M1 can be released into milk when fungi-infested feed is fed to cattle.

The quality of the milk received from the producers was tested by an automated cloud-based milk analyzer in milk collection centers. In addition, quality control laboratories at the dairies test the milk for quality and adulteration parameters such as urea, detergent, maltodextrose, sugar and others using milk analyzers based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) technology.

N Subbaiah, Aavin’s Milk Commissioner and Managing Director, said milk samples from collection centers and dairies are tested every three months in Madhavaram at each stage. “Although milk is already being tested in dairies, the central system will monitor the quality parameters of the district associations.”
The lab will eliminate Aavin’s reliance on NABL and FSSAI labs to perform critical testing, thereby reducing costs incurred by the association, Subbaiah added.

The lab has been equipped with high-precision equipment to analyze chemicals, heavy metals, residual and nutrient compounds in milk and milk products to confirm regulatory requirements, a statement said.
