hilton – SINGAPORE – The pandemic has redefined travel, and Hilton (NYSE:HLT), a leading hospitality company, presents its latest survey results1, Travel Trends show how the last two years have not only transformed the way people travel, but also why. Findings showed that the lines between work and personal travel are increasingly blurring – with vacation time increasingly being added to work trips. This signals the need to establish new rhythms of calm and reconnection, and emphasizes why where you stay matters now more than ever.

“Our study shows that not only is business travel being extended for additional downtime, but leisure travel also needs to be flexible and connected enough to allow for an element of remote working or working from anywhere,” he said ben georgeSenior Vice President and Commercial Director, Hilton, Asia Pacific. “More than ever, the focus is on the stay itself and the overall offer of the hotel experience. When you need to create an inspirational presentation on the go, it depends on where you are – the setting, the food and the amenities make all the difference.”

Blurring boundaries between work and life

The rise of remote working during the pandemic has accelerated an always-on culture, leading to a greater desire and need among employees to disconnect from constant video conferencing and the incessant ping of messaging apps.

43% of Indonesian and Malaysian travelers say they want a break from work, but among them, 95% and 81% still spend some time on work while traveling with family.

Busy respondents off Singapore (66%) and Australia (64%) can’t seem to switch off their work mode, although they would like to.

There’s also the added stress of guilt that comes with answering work emails while on vacation, according to half of respondents Indonesia (59%), Australia (58%), Malaysia (57%) and Singapore (54%).

Work remotely from stunning locations

At the same time, there is an increasing preference among travelers to make the most of the remote working flexibility that more companies are now offering. Across the region, employed respondents would choose to work in some form while traveling India (98%) at the top, followed by Thailand and Indonesia (95%), Malaysia (81%), Singapore (65%) and Australia (64%).

This corresponds with longer stays in hotels, which provide an ideal environment to work from anywhere if preferred. Hilton booking data showed an average length of stay increase of up to two days from 2019 to 2022 Asia Pacific-With Singapore and Bangkok take the lead after five or four days.

Across all APAC markets surveyed, respondents chose sitting by the pool or beach, booking a relaxing spa treatment and taking a nap as one of their favorite activities when having time to themselves while on vacation2.
