Republican Senators Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley have asked Facebook to turn over all communications with the FBI, Justice Department and other government bureaucrats regarding First Son Hunter Biden, his laptop, his business dealings and Russian disinformation.
In a new letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Tuesday (tomorrow), Sen. Johnson, senior member of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, and Sen. Grassley, senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, also requested the names of all FBI and DOJ officials, who warned Facebook that an imminent document dump ahead of the 2020 election would be Russian disinformation, mistakenly prompting the social media giant to suppress The Post’s Hunter Biden laptop story.
“The American people deserve to know if the FBI used Facebook as part of its alleged plan to discredit information about Hunter Biden,” the senators wrote.
“If so, Congress and the American people need clarity on the extent to which the FBI communicated with Facebook about Hunter Biden-related information during the 2020 election.”
Zuckerberg told podcaster Joe Rogan last week that the FBI came to Facebook specifically in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election to warn the company that it was “about to commit” a “Russian propaganda” with a document dump start that “fits into the pattern”. ‘ of the Post’s story of October 14, 2020.
“Basically the background here is the FBI, I think basically some people on our team came up to us and said, ‘Hey, just so you know, you should be on high alert. We thought there was a lot of Russian propaganda in the 2016 elections. We know that basically there will be a kind of dump similar to this one. So just be vigilant.’”
Sens. Johnson and Grassley said Zuckerberg’s revelation that Facebook took steps to censor information about Hunter Biden on its platform based on FBI orders “raises even more questions about the FBI’s actions regarding Hunter Biden’s laptop.” .
“As you may be aware, whistleblowers recently alleged to Senator Grassley that in August 2020, FBI officials initiated a program to downplay derogatory information about Hunter Biden in order to halt investigative activities related to his potential criminal exposure by labeling it as a Label ‘disinformation’. ‘
“Whistleblowers have also alleged to Senator Johnson that local FBI leadership instructed their staff not to look at Hunter Biden’s laptop immediately after the FBI received it.”
In a second letter Tuesday to Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray, Republicans also requested records of the Justice Department’s and FBI’s contact with Facebook, Twitter and other social media companies related to the Biden family, Hunter’s laptop and Russian disinformation.
They complained about the FBI’s “consistent failure to respond to inquiries from Congress.”
“The FBI’s consistent efforts to misrepresent information about the Biden family’s misconduct as Russian disinformation remains a matter of serious concern,” they wrote.
“In August 2020, the FBI provided an unnecessary and unsolicited briefing that was used by our Democratic colleagues to misrepresent our Biden investigation as promoting Russian disinformation. Our investigation was based on Obama/Biden administration records and included transcribed interviews with witnesses who were once employees of that administration. The FBI’s ill-conceived actions not only interfered with our congressional investigations by frustrating and hampering our ability to advance the matters under scrutiny, but also interfered with the 2020 election.
Additionally, whistleblowers recently alleged to Senator Grassley that in August 2020, FBI officials initiated a program to downplay derogatory information about Hunter Biden in order to halt investigative activities related to his potential criminal exposure, calling it “disinformation.” .”7 Whistleblowers have also claimed to Senator Johnson that local FBI leadership instructed staff not to look at Hunter Biden’s laptop immediately after the FBI received it.8 alleged plan to discredit information about Hunter.
The senators also asked for the names of DOJ and FBI officials who communicated with social media companies about Russian disinformation during the 2020 election, as well as the names of Facebook officials contacted.
