Court asks Raut to appear virtually in the case of defamation

Raut was held at Arthur Road Prison in Mumbai after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case

A magistrates’ court here on Thursday ordered Arthur prison authorities to videoconference MP Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena in connection with a defamation lawsuit filed by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya’s wife, Medha Somaiya.

Raut was held at Arthur Road Prison in Mumbai after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case.

The Sewri City Magistrate, hearing the defamation case filed by the BJP leader’s wife, urged prison authorities to try Raut at 12 noon Thursday, her lawyer Vivekanand Gupta said.

Medha Somaiya alleged in her complaint that Raut had made baseless and totally defamatory allegations against her and her husband, accusing them of being involved in a Rs 100 crore fraud involving the construction and maintenance of some public toilets in the jurisdiction of Mira Bhayander Municipality to his company in Thane. She has asked the court to prosecute Raut for defamation under Sections 499 and 500 of India’s Penal Code.
