Apple is said to have secured an internet satellite company to offer users of its upcoming iPhone 14 connectivity no matter where they are in the world.

If the claims are true, iOS users will be able to exchange calls and text messages in remote areas, similar to Elon Musk and T-Mobile’s announcement last week that SpaceX’s Starlink internet will be used.

This aligns with rumors that the tech giant’s next smartphone will include hardware to support satellite communications, and a well-known Apple analyst suggests the technology is already available for the iPhone 13 – Apple was just missing one vendor.

However, the Apple analyst warns that the launch is dependent on the company and “operators being able to agree on a business model,” while T-Mobile has promised customers by next year.

The claims were made by Ming-Chi Kuo, who is known for making claims about Apple that morph into real-world products, features, or services.

Kuo shared this information in a Medium post, in which he claims Apple has already completed hardware development of satellite communications in the iPhone 13,” he wrote.

“The lack of support is because the business model was not negotiated.”

Kuo also notes that satellite communication was one of the key test objects in the iPhone 14 before it was ready for mass production.

“Whether the iPhone 14 will offer satellite communications services depends on whether Apple and carriers can agree on the business model,” he said.

The upcoming iPhone 14 handset is set to launch on September 7 and users can expect an improved camera and likely new colours, but speculation suggests there will be a 15 per cent price increase due to inflation – but this could include access to satellite internet.

But as of now, T-Mobile and SpaceX are leading the way to make that happen.

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sieveret, who co-hosted an event with Musk at the Starbase in Texas last week, said some of T-Mobile’s 5G mid-band spectrum will be integrated into the second-generation Starlink satellites, comparing the Innovation with ‘a cell tower in the sky.’

Musk also described using space internet as a way to “save lives,” as there are countless stories of people getting lost while hiking, freezing to death in a snowstorm, or dying of thirst.

“We’re not going to read more about these tragedies where people got lost and if they could only have called for help then everything would have been fine,” he continued.

Smartphones are blocked by the radio frequency (RF) signals sent out by cell phone towers. However, if that signal is too far away or blocked by obstacles, the handset is basically dead.

And this is where Starlink comes in.

The company has placed nearly 3,000 satellites in low-Earth orbit since 2019 and plans to launch the second-generation device, V2, next year, which will feature a large antenna to connect directly to smartphones in the T-Mobile – Establish network.

With this technology, T-Mobile plans to offer SMS coverage to customers virtually anywhere in the continental US, Hawaii, parts of Alaska, Puerto Rico and territorial waters, even outside of T-Mobile network signal, starting with a beta release in selected areas by the end of next year after SpaceX’s planned satellite launches.
